Atlanta Makes Top 10 List

Which Top 10 List did Atlanta make this time? We barely scraped in to the list of Top 10 Cities with Longest Commute Times.  Maybe not the list any of us commuters in Atlanta want to be on, but nonetheless we are. It could be worse…we could be higher on the list, so let’s count our blessings that there are 9 cities rated higher than us in this poll.

Among those blessings in that long commute are billboards…they can benefit both the commuters looking at them as well as the businesses advertising on them.

Many of the commuters are no doubt thinking about what they have to do when the commute ends…cook dinner, cut the grass, buy a gift for a party this weekend, or any other task that will have to be done when they get home. Billboards allow advertisers to promote goods and services that can solve any of those problems, and getting the word out benefits their bottom line.

Here are the Top 10 Cities with the Longest Commutes, shown in minutes for a one way drive.

  1. New York, NY                 34.7
  2. Long Island, NY             33.3
  3. Washington, DC             32.8
  4. Newark, NJ                      31.1
  5. Chicago, IL                      30.8
  6. Boston, MA                     30.4
  7. Oakland, CA                    29.9
  8. Riverside, CA                  29.8
  9. Baltimore, MD               29.4
  10. Atlanta, GA                    29.2

So now let’s flip to the other side…the Top 10 Cities with the Shortest Commute times, also shown in minutes for a one way drive.

  1. Buffalo, NY                     20.3
  2. Columbus, OH               21.8
  3. Hartford, CT                  22.3
  4. Milwaukee, WI             22.3
  5. Las Vegas, NV               22.5

  8. San Diego, CA                23.0

Anti Gun Violence Campaign Gets Funding

Mary-Pat Hector may be young, but she’s beyond her years when it comes to understanding the world.  Hector is now a 19 year old junior at Spelman College in Atlanta, but she’s been working to end gun violence in her community for years.  Hector says she was tired of hearing about kids dying from gunshot wounds and wanted to do something about it.  She started “Think Twice,” a campaign aimed at encouraging people to think twice before they pick up a gun and pull the trigger.  She says when people think of gun violence, they may think it can’t happen to them.

“But to become uncomfortable with that, to be moved to action, you have to see yourself.  I wanted to create billboards so that people could see themselves, to see it happening to them.”  But despite her hard work, funding for a billboard campaign just wasn’t there.  Then Hector heard about an organization called “Peace First” that was offering a $50,000 prize for submitting a compelling video explaining your mission.  She not only submitted a video, she took that grand prize!

It was enough to fund nearly 50 billboards around the metro Atlanta area to display her anti gun violence message.  Hector said she was proud of that achievement and people really started to take notice of her mission and she was asked to speak to various groups and organizations.

But she didn’t stop there.  She also got the attention of the Allstate Foundation.  They took her message to Chicago and put it on billboards there as well.  Hector says that came as a complete surprise.  She was shocked to travel to the windy city and see her image and message on billboards there.  “I was taken aback. It’s still in the beginning stages, but we’re really excited.  Really, really excited,” Hector said.

She’s not the only activist in her family.  Her parents were also champions for various causes as well and she credits her mother with teaching her that “Good starts young.”

Emoji Billboards Change with Surroundings

Emojis are everywhere these days and digital billboards are no exception!  With the release of the Emoji movie over the weekend, the little characters went from our smart phones to the big screen. Even if you didn’t want to see the movie, with the heavy marketing campaign for it, you no doubt knew it was coming out.

Part of that marketing campaign put the little guys on digital billboards.  But the cool part about that was that the billboards were able to interact with their surroundings.  The campaign used the latest technology to display an Emoji that best represented the emotion of the people within view of the billboard.  For example, the technology was able to determine if traffic was backed up near the digital billboard or if it was raining.  If those unfavorable conditions were present, the Emoji reflected that, with the billboard showing either the devil, “meh” emoji, or even the “poop.”

On the flip side, if the traffic was flowing or the sun shining, a high five Emoji or a smiling face Emoji would come up on the display.  The billboard campaign ran in major cities all over the U.S., including here in Atlanta, as well as in Chicago, Orlando, Seattle, Dallas, Phoenix, and Boston.

Although the movie did well in its opening weekend, the reviews were less than stellar.  Many critics agreed that it was a waste of spectacular voice talents, that included Sophia Vergara, Stephen Wright, Patrick Stewart, Sean Hayes, Maya Rudolph, and Christina Aguilera.

Billboard Campaign Inspires Happiness

2015 Gratitude Billboard Atlanta

We are less than a week away from the International Day of Happiness, which happens to coincide with the first day of Spring, Sunday March 20th.  For the second year in a row, The Joy Team is leading a partnership to bring happy phrases to billboards across the nation, hoping to inspire people to be happy and kind.

The founder of The Joy Team, Michele McKeag Larsen, says “one positive message can make a huge difference in someone’s day.”  Larsen has partnered with The Natural Life for this year’s campaign, along with Clear Channel and Lamar Outdoor.  Founder and CEO of The Natural Life, Patti Hughes, says “the moment we saw the billboards and the story behind The Joy Team, we knew we wanted to be a part of it.”

The billboard campaign will run for 4 weeks, beginning today, and it is expected that more than 13 million people will see one of the billboards during the campaign.  Billboards were chosen as the advertising medium for the campaign because they cannot be turned off or have the channel changed.   The group adds that most people can’t help but read something they see because it’s automatic.

Atlanta was one of the cities in the campaign last year, and will be among the 31 cities featured this year as well.  This year’s message for the Atlanta billboard is “Believe in Yourself.”  Some of the other messages featured in the campaign include “Do more of what makes you happy,” “Slow down and enjoy life,” and “Everything will be ok.”

Thermal Billboard Detects A Fever

Thermo Scanning Billboard

The future is here…a billboard equipped with a thermo-scanner camera is detecting one of the tell tale signs of the flu before the viewers even know they are sick.  Fever is one of the first signs of the flu, and Theraflu wanted to give people a fast and effective way to tell if they may be getting sick.   The campaign was done as a collaboration between Saatchi & Saatchi’s offices in Poland and Switzerland.  It is running at the height of flu season in Warsaw, Poland.

This campaign is the first of its kind in the world…the thermo-scanning camera not only provides a real time assessment of the subject’s body temperature, it also produces a thermal selfie, that the user can share…possible proof of illness for a doubtful boss or spouse?

GlaxoSmithKline manufactures Theraflu…the Global Chief Creative Officer for the brand, Jason Romeyko, says the campaign “really fits into GSK’s commitment to transforming their properties into Fast Moving Consumer Health Brands.” Romeyko adds, “This outdoor ad is a wonderful mashup of technology, health, real life application, and consumer engagement.  It fires up a new set of innovative ideas we can bring to life in healthcare and wellness.”

Although the flu season won’t be around much longer here in Atlanta, no word on whether the campaign will come to Atlanta billboards when the flu fires up again later this year.

IKEA’s Billboard Ads Appear Mismatched

IKEA Billboard

Everyone who has ever tried to assemble something from IKEA knows it can be a pain, to say the least.  But now, even IKEA is not denying it can be frustrating and have used that idea to advertise their assembly service.  The art work on the billboards is mixed up, but the message is clear…they will take the pain out of your purchase and put their furniture together for you.

Their German agency, thjnk, came up with the campaign…it’s not their first memorable one for IKEA.  Back in 2014, they turned 9 meters of ad space into 27 by superimposing three messages in three different colors on one billboard, where normally, only one message would fit.  Lights that differentiated the colors and three messages changed, revealing a different message depending on the light.

We don’t know if this campaign will hit Atlanta billboards, but if it does, you’ll know it’s all part of the plan.

Ford Lets Consumers Design Billboards

Ford Consumer Designed Billboards

If you’ve always wanted to see your artwork on a billboard, Ford may just give you that chance.  Ford just ended their “By Design” campaign that allowed consumers to design digital billboards featuring their vehicles.  The designs were posted on digital billboards in cities across the U.S., including Washington DC, Times Square, Bay Bridge, Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles.  Designs were posted on the digital billboards for 8 seconds, and a photo of the billboard was taken and sent to the designer.  Although the campaign has ended for now, a spokeswoman for Ford says it may come back later this year.  She said the technology is still in place and they would like to delve deeper into the meaning of the campaign and will do so in the first quarter of this year.  Although Atlanta billboards were not on the initial list of cities featuring the digital billboards, hopefully Atlanta billboards will make the cut in the second round of the campaign.

UGA Billboards Target Recruits

Pro bowl Georgia billboardsThe University of Georgia has changed their billboard designs this month to stay front and center with new recruits…they are highlighting their Pro Bowl alums in the NFL.  Todd Gurley with the St. Louis Rams, Justin Houston with the Kansas City Chiefs, Thomas Davis with the Carolina Panthers, A.J. Green and Geno Atkins with the Cincinnati Bengals are featured in the campaign.  Billboards all over the Atlanta area feature images of all of the Pro Bowlers, as well as each player having his own billboard.

On the roads leading to Athens, another billboard campaign is welcoming the new head coach…that design features a picture of Kirby Smart with the phrase, “Welcome Home.”  The campaigns want to keep UGA fresh in the minds of potential recruits.

Billboards Aid in Search for Suspect

murder suspect atlanta billboards

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is using Atlanta billboards to get the word out about one of their most wanted suspects.  Damian Thomas is wanted in connection with the shooting death of 35 year old DeShannon Reid back in April in Delaware. Thomas fled the scene of the shooting and is believed to be in the Atlanta area…authorities say he has relatives in Atlanta and may also be travelling the I-85 and I-95 corridors in Georgia and Florida.   The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Thomas’ arrest.  If you have any information on Thomas’ whereabouts, call the FBI at 1-800-225-5324.

UGA Changes Billboards to Rally Fans

Bama Campaign on Atlanta billboardsTomorrow will be Showdown Saturday in the SEC for the University of Georgia as they take on their biggest rival, the University of Alabama.   In August, UGA began a digital billboard campaign on more than 40 boards around Atlanta to recruit prospects for the school.  This week, to rally their fan base, UGA has converted some of their Atlanta digital billboards to include a “Beat Bama” message.  The teams will meet for what is considered the biggest game of the season on Saturday.  UGA comes into the contest undefeated, while Bama has lost one.  Although the Bulldogs haven’t beaten the Crimson Tide since 2007, they are the favorite to win tomorrow.  Kick off is scheduled for 3:30 in Athens.
